Epiphany
As Christmas has the four Sundays of Advent to prepare the way, the festival of Epiphany (6th of January) has four Sundays belonging to it, but they come afterwards! A mirror picture! Epiphany is celebrated as Christmas in the Russian Orthodox Church. It celebrates two events. The first, the three Kings, Melchior, Balthazar and Caspar brought their offerings to the Jesus child. The second, 30 years later, John the Baptist performed the Baptism of Jesus of Nazareth. John then witnessed the actual birth of Christ ‘the sphere of heaven opened and the spirit of God in the form of a dove descended and entered him’. The word ‘Epiphany’ means to shine above or to shine over. The star leading the three Kings was not to be found in the sky, it was the spiritual being of the divine son shining over the child on earth. The ‘star’ united with Jesus of Nazareth at the Baptism in the river Jordan.

Bad Weather
The school will be closed for the day if the road from Castleton to Botton is known to be impassable. A message about school closure will be placed on the 206-answer phone as soon as possible. There may also be occasions when the school is closed as a result of a consensus within the school that road conditions in general are too dangerous for safe travel, but the fact that the school remains open should not be taken as an indication that the school considers that driving conditions are safe. As local weather conditions are so variable it is impossible for the school to give advice on road conditions that would help
families planning journeys from a distance. You should make your own decision about whether or not to travel, based on your local situation, and make the paramount consideration for your, and your child’s safety. If the teachers feel that children should be sent home early because of the weather, the school will telephone you in advance. As this is often a difficult decision to make, you should feel free to remove your child from school early if you are anxious about weather conditions.
The College of Teachers
Val Taylor
We warmly welcome Val Taylor to the school. Val has been a visiting teacher for the last four years at least. She arrives with her car full of
Circus skills equipment, and sometimes very beautiful bones for teaching Anatomy.
For the next three weeks Val will mainly be following the lessons of Class 5/6 from Tuesdays until Fridays. She will also be teaching a lesson a week with each class, and sometimes working with individuals. We hope she enjoys her time with us. We always feel inspired by her visits.
