Ascension & Whitsun 2008
This year there was an extra debating point concerning the Easter festival. Easter Sunday was very early (March 23rd).
For the record the official definition of Western Easter is that it takes place on:
The first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the vernal equinox. In other words Easter Sunday can arise between March 22nd and April 25th. Defining when Easter arises also thereby defines the dates of Ascension and Whitson.
On Ascension Day, 40 days after Easter Sunday, the Risen Christ ‘ascended’ into the clouds and became inaccessible to the Disciples for the next ten days. During this period the Disciples experienced a certain sadness but they also reflected upon the teachings they had received.
Ten days after Ascension Thursday is Whitsun, which is sometimes also referred to as Pentecost. The ‘word’ Pentecost is derived from an ancient Greek word meaning ‘fiftieth’ (50 days after Easter).
On the day of Whitsun each Disciple received the ‘fire’ of the Holy Spirit at the same time. This event then enabled the Disciples to go out and teach the message of Christ to all peoples, transcending the divisions of religion, language and semantics. We should remember at Whitsun that each human being has a divine spark of ‘fire’ within.

Whitsun –
"White Sunday" - will be celebrated in school with the children on Monday 12th May. Please could the children wear white tops for this festival.
The Return of Odysseus
Performed by Class 5/6 in the school hall on Thursday May 8th at 2 o’clock
All are welcome. The play lasts for approximately 40 minutes. Odysseus has sailed reluctantly to war against the Trojans, not wanting to part from his wife, his baby son or his people. Now many years have passed and his cunning has brought the Greeks victory. He sets sail for home and, despite Athena’s aid, his journey takes him ten long years. He has to face one great challenge after another.
He is feared dead but there is still hope, particularly in the heart of his wife Penelope. She sits and weeps, and weaves a shroud for the father of Odysseus who is near to death. Only when this is finished will she consider taking the hand of one of the many persistent suitors who inflict themselves upon her. She is determined to keep weaving for as long as possible.
Can the good nature of her family and loyal friends win out against the determination and greed of the suitors?
Come along and find out on Thursday.

Please come to the
Parents Teachers and Friends School Development Meeting
Tuesday 3rd June 8pm
A chance for you to have your say and to contribute your ideas. What are the school’s main strengths and weaknesses? What do we, as a school community, need to do to make the most of our strengths and remedy our weaknesses? What can we do to raise money, increase involvement and improve communication? The plan is to split into groups for discussion and then to reconvene to feed back to the whole meeting. We would like every school family to be represented. Please send apologies via Michael if you are unable to attend
The Teachers and the Coordinators
Timing of Meetings
The Coordinators had intended to carry out a survey of parents to investigate alternative days and times for the above meeting but, as a result of other commitments in the final half term, it has become impractical to consider moving from the traditional Tuesday slot on this occasion.
