Candlemas
On February 2, forty days after the Nativity, the holy child was presented in the temple according to custom and venerated by aged Anna and Simon, who proclaimed the child to be a ‘light’. At the beginning of February, when the infant light of spring is greeted thankfully by the cold winter earth, it seems fitting that we should celebrate Candlemas, a candle festival to remember that moment when the light of the world was received into the temple, when the old yielded to the new.
