Middle School Classes 1 to 8 (7 - 14 years)

In this phase formal learning, including writing, reading and arithmetic, begins under the care of a class teacher, who ideally remains with the class for eight years. The continuous relationship between teacher and child encourages security and respect and minimises the annual readjustment children in many other schools have to make as they move from class to class. The child develops trust and confidence in the teacher and the teacher can attain a deep understanding of each child.

In the daily 'Main Lesson', which occupies the first two hours of each morning, one subject at a time is explored in depth over a three to four week period. The child can become fully absorbed in the subject - whether it be Farming, Ancient Greece, Nature Study, Mathematics or Chemistry - and can work out of it in conversation, writing, drawing, painting, modelling or drama. All subjects, the sciences as well as the humanities, are presented by the teacher and then recorded by the pupils in the own colourful 'Main Lesson Books'. Through natural authority the teacher addresses the imagination of the child, striving to transform the process of learning into a rhythmic, artistic experience.

Alongside the Main Lesson there are regular practice lessons, often with other teachers, in Mathematics, English, Foreign Languages (French and German), Music, Art, Handwork, Woodwork, Games, Swimming, Eurythmy and Gardening or Land work. Singing and recorder playing are an integral part of main lessons in all classes, and there is a weekly orchestra for all children from Class 3 upwards.

In accordance with Botton School's small village character, the classes are usually combined (i.e. two years groups under one teacher). Pupil numbers in each class, however, remain small enough to allow for a good amount of individual attention. Throughout the year the major Christian festivals are celebrated. Each term there is a school festival where the classes present some of their work to an audience of other children, parents and friends. Class plays are performed regularly, and school trips are a feature of the summer term.
